Laminate Flooring Installation
A hard, scratch-resistant wear surface at a friendly price per square foot.
Modern laminate is a high-density fiberboard core with a printed decor layer and an aluminum-oxide wear surface. That top layer is harder than any wood species, which is why laminate still wins in busy hallways, stair landings and family rooms where chairs get dragged.
Water-resistant laminate has closed a lot of the gap with vinyl, but the core is still wood fiber. We are honest about where it belongs and where a waterproof product is the smarter call.
Where it works well
- Bedrooms, hallways, living rooms and offices
- Budget-conscious whole-home refreshes before selling
- Homes wanting a deeply textured wood look without wood pricing
What to watch out for
- Standing water at seams can swell the core permanently — not the first choice for a full bath
- Laminate is louder underfoot than vinyl; underlayment choice makes a real difference
- It cannot be sanded or refinished; damaged planks are replaced, not repaired
How we install it
- Underlayment
- We match underlayment to the subfloor: an attached pad plus a slab vapor barrier over concrete, or a quiet foam over plywood.
- Layout
- Plank direction usually runs with the longest sightline or with the light from the main window wall. We stagger end joints so no seam pattern repeats.
- Doors and jambs
- Jambs are undercut so flooring slides beneath — no visible scribing or caulk lines.
Subfloor requirements
Plywood/OSB or concrete slab with an appropriate vapor barrier.
Typical rooms
Bedrooms, living areas, hallways, stairs, home offices.
Laminate questions we get asked
- Is laminate or LVP better?
- Laminate typically has the harder, more scratch-resistant surface. LVP handles water better. If a room can flood, choose vinyl; if it will be walked and dragged on, laminate holds up well.
- Can laminate go in a basement?
- Water-resistant laminate over a proper vapor barrier can work in a dry, conditioned basement. In a basement with any moisture history we recommend vinyl instead.
- Does it need a transition at every doorway?
- Not always. Continuous runs are possible within the manufacturer's maximum span, which we confirm before layout.
