Choosing Flooring for the Treasure Valley Climate

Indoor humidity here can swing from single digits in January to comfortable in June. That swing, not the showroom sample, is what decides whether a floor stays flat.

The humidity swing is the whole problem

The Treasure Valley is a high-desert basin. When furnaces run through a January cold snap, indoor relative humidity in an average Boise or Nampa home can drop into the 10–20% range. By late spring it climbs back toward the 30s and 40s. Wood responds to that by giving up moisture and shrinking in winter, then taking it back in spring.

Every flooring decision here is really a decision about how much movement you are willing to accept and how you plan to manage it.

  • Solid hardwood moves the most, especially in wide planks
  • Engineered hardwood's cross-ply core resists most of that movement
  • Laminate's fiberboard core swells with liquid water more than with humidity
  • Rigid-core vinyl is the least humidity-sensitive but reacts to temperature

Match the material to the room, not the whole house

It is common and completely reasonable to run one product through the main living areas and something different in wet rooms. A continuous look matters in open sightlines; behind a bathroom door it does not.

Where water can pool — full baths, laundry, utility rooms, mudrooms off gravel drives — tile or waterproof vinyl earns its keep. Where the priority is warmth and resale character, wood is the better answer.

Subfloor moisture matters more than the product spec

Concrete slabs in newer Meridian, Kuna and Star subdivisions can still be releasing moisture years after the pour, and crawlspaces in older Nampa, Caldwell and Middleton homes can run humid through irrigation season.

A relative-humidity probe test on slab, or a moisture meter reading on wood subfloor, takes very little time and is the single best predictor of whether a floor will still look right in five years. Any installer who skips it is guessing.

Acclimation is not optional

Flooring delivered from a cold warehouse in February is not at the same moisture content as your living room. Letting material sit in the conditioned space, in the room it will be installed in, brings the two into balance.

The time required varies by product — some rigid vinyl needs only 48 hours at temperature, solid hardwood can need considerably longer. The manufacturer sets the number; we follow it rather than the calendar.

Managing humidity after the install

If you install real wood, a whole-home humidifier or even a couple of portable units through the heating season will visibly reduce winter gapping. Keeping the house in a moderate humidity band year-round is the cheapest floor insurance available.

Seasonal gapping in solid hardwood is normal and usually closes in spring. Permanent cupping or crowning is not, and usually traces back to a moisture source rather than the wood itself.

Frequently asked questions

Is hardwood a bad choice in Idaho?
No. It needs an appropriate subfloor, real acclimation and reasonable winter humidity. Where those cannot be met — a slab, a wet room, a very dry house — engineered wood or vinyl is the better fit.
How dry does it actually get indoors here?
Homes running forced air through a cold spell commonly sit in the 10–20% relative humidity range without a humidifier, which is well below what solid wood prefers.
Does a basement need different flooring?
Usually yes. Below-grade concrete brings moisture risk that favors waterproof vinyl or tile over any wood-core product.
